Did you miss OJ0 the last time I was at Market Reef? Santa didn’t leave you anything under the tree this year?

I’m planning a new DXpedition to OJ0 Market Reef in Q2 2023, together with three other operators. We’re planning to keep two stations active around the clock, for about seven days. We will also give VHF a shot this time – 6m, 4m, and maybe even 2m.

The VHF operator have purchased a custom PA for 6m/4m, as well as the designated aerials. I have purchased a 1kW PA tube workhorse, and will be on a lookout for a transistor PA to have as a backup.

We’re currently evaluating various antennas for the HF part of the operation.

L’opérateur VHF a acheté un PA personnalisé pour 6 m/4 m, ainsi que les antennes désignées. J’ai acheté un bourreau de travail à tube PA de 1 kW et je serai à la recherche d’un transistor PA à avoir en secours.

Nous évaluons actuellement différentes antennes pour la partie HF de l’opération.

[NEWS UPDATE] – Early preparations underway for the upcoming IOTA AS-140 activity. Previous updates below:

[DECEMBER 8] – At 0300z today, the team reached Bhola island. The second part of the journey by road will take approx 3 hours so all going well they hope to arrive Dal Char island by lunchtime (local). 

[DECEMBER 7] – S21DX team sent the heavy items (generator, masts, antennas, dry food, rice etc) this morning (December 7) towards Bhola Islands (volunteer Robiul is with the truck). Rest of the team will start the journey this evening (UTC 1200) on a public motor launch service. Tomorrow (midday local) they will unload the truck at Bhola island and reserve a fishing trawler and sail towards Dhal Char island. Unfortunately, due to unavoidable circumstances two operators (S21TG and S21IT) had to drop out of the team.

[DECEMBER 4] Various recent news updates can be found on the official S21DX website, but today DX-World received a copy of the S21DX license for the upcoming AS-140 DXpedition. (Copy of license has been blurred). It was issued by National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority. Team also received a nice DX-World banner 🙂 A reminder this expedition is scheduled for December 10-16.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a weather monitoring station on Willis Island. The station was established in 1921, it serves as an early cyclone warning service for the state of Queensland.

The meteorological station is staffed by crew of 4 that rotate every 6 months. There are 2 Observers (including myself), 1 Officer In Charge (OIC/Observer) and 1 Technician. I have been on the Island since October 2022 and will be here until the end of April 2023.

My operating position on Willis Island is a Yaesu FT-891 transceiver with a DX Commander Classic multiband vertical antenna. I have an SDRplay receiver that I am yet to setup.

3D2AG/P set-up

[NOVEMBER 20] Antoine, 3D2AG informs DX-World of his next Rotuma DXpedition: 

Getting ready here to travel to Rotuma Island (OC-060) around 0600 UTC Saturday, for a 48-hour boat journey. Hoping to be operational around the 24th of November, and until the 20th or December. This is a one-man operation, combining QRL and DX. I hope to be QRV from 160m to 6m, although focus will be on higher bands (15m, 12m, 10m) on CW, SSB, RTTY and some FT8. It would take some significant time and effort to set up the 160m antenna, so I will first monitor the band to see if there is any activity.

Equipment will be the IC-7300 and IC-706MKIIG, with an ACOM 600S linear (max 650W). Most of my FT8 operation on higher bands will be using 100W and solar power; a 3KVA generator and QRO 600W will be used on lower bands FT8 and CW/SSB/RTTY on all bands including 6m.

Antennas will consist of the following:
160: 18m high inverted-L
80 / 40m: Home-made OCFD inverted-V at 15m height.
30m / 60m: Monoband inverted-Vs
20m-17m-15m-12m-10m: Spiderbeam
6m: 5-el Cushcraft A50-5S yagi (extended boom version).

On CW I will usually be on the lower portion of the band, unless when the band is open to the USA I will try to be on the general class portion, unless the QRM is too high.

Tentative CW/SSB QRGs:

160m: 1822.5 KHz
80m: 3502 KHz / 3792 KHz
60m: 5359 KHz
40m: 7002 KHz / 7152 KHz

En espérant être opérationnel vers le 24 novembre, et jusqu’au 20 ou décembre. Il s’agit d’une opération d’un seul homme, combinant QRL et DX. J’espère être QRV de 160m à 6m, bien que l’accent soit mis sur les bandes supérieures (15m, 12m, 10m) sur CW, SSB, RTTY et certains FT8. Il faudrait beaucoup de temps et d’efforts pour installer l’antenne de 160 m, je vais donc d’abord surveiller la bande pour voir s’il y a une activité.
