SEPTEMBER 22, 2020 – Team MS0INT has today been granted permission to land on the Bass Rock (EU-123) and to undertake an IOTA DXpedition from there. Firm dates and full details to be announced, but likely early next year (February, March or April) before any activity. The Bass Rock has only ever been activated three times (1997, 2001, 2008) according to research. The team is indebted to Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Sir Hew Dalrymple, for allowing them to land on his island.

NEWS UPDATE – JX2US has been active for just over three weeks and has currently made 6200 QSOs. Note: CW activity will be on/around IOTA frequencies or at the lower band edges. Also some fresh snowfall on the island today.

OCTOBER 13 – As the sun shone brightly, shortly before 11:00z today, Erik JX2US made his first contacts from Jan Mayen. Recordings courtesy PA2LO and IZ5CML.
Incidentally, we recently came across this video. It’s a very good watch and Jan Mayen features about 3/4 into the adventure.
OCTOBER 2 – Erik did indeed arrive Jan Mayen yesterday and all is well as he settles in. Keep it DX-World for fresh JX2US updates. PS: Image below (taken today) is of the area on the island located near to the meteorological station.
SEPTEMBER 27 – Scheduled date for the flight to Jan Mayen is October 1st. It might be delayed depending on the WX. The first days will be used for training and settling in, so don’t expect much activity then. Logsearch

JX2US will probably use T2FD style antenna on low bands, and he will mostly be located on the wrong side of the mountains for DX to NA/JA. I don’t think he will be even close to competing with JX0X on 80 and 160m.
SEPTEMBER 10, 2020 – Erik LA2US will be active as JX2US from Jan Mayen this coming (northern hemisphere) winter. He will operate CW, FT8 and probably some more modes. Focus on 160m, 80m, 40m and 30m. The season lasts from early October ’20 to the end of March ’21. More here. Logsearch here.

In April this year a team from the Russian Robinson Club activated a new IOTA (Kosa Dvukh Pilotov Island AS-207) as R207RRC. The expedition was documented on DX-World and can be found here. Video above.

Tom, NL7RR is a contractor working on Wake island. His KH9/NL7RR operation is time permitting, but does hope to operate (daily) between 06:00 – 08:00 UTC on 20 or 40 SSB. At this time, he is travelling to Hawaii for a week-long rest then returning to Wake.
Glenn, AL7JX got in touch to say that he and Tom, NL7WK are assisting Tom with LoTW uploads and QSL duties, both of which should be available soon; cards are being worked on and printed.

I was very stressed when I arrived here this morning, despite being able to sleep in the plane for 4 hours. My host here in Papeete, an incredible guy I would recommend anyone who needs accommodation in Papeete, told me right away: you have to relax now, decompress, it’s French Polynesia, things work differently here!
I will be early for my flight to Tatakoto tomorrow morning. I have a lot of luggage, and I’m not worried a bit about paying for it, but I’m a little concerned as to whether they will allow me to take everything with me. I know from past experience that this is not always possible. Flights to this atoll are so rare, that they may order some things to be flown in, so… who knows if there is sufficient space on the plane.
Then, upon arrival in Tatakoto, I need to see my accommodation. I don’t care of anything except having space for an antenna and AC power. I know that they have a solar panel based AC system, and hope that everything is working as designed, hi.
I am going to have dinner now, after which I am going to bed. It is very warm and humid here. It rained all day today, between 5 am and 6 pm. It is 7 pm now and pitch dark, as sunset at 6 pm.

I am now at the guesthouse in Papeete. The arrival in Tahiti was uneventful, except that the passengers found themselves under a torrential rain pouring in just as they put foot on the tarmack. I managed to sleep for four hours during the flight, which allowed me to get here a bit refreshed. The covid-19 test clinics open at 8 am, and I’ll have to find the closest one to go to right away.
OCTOBER 28 @ 05:30Z –
I arrived in time at the Air Tahiti check-in desk on the Los Angeles airport. Upon verification that I do have the correct and valid covid-19 type test, Air Tahiti issued me a new ticket from LA to Papeete. I am currently waiting for boarding, which will start momentarily. I haven’t eaten much today, so I’m waiting for the ‘dinner on the plane’, hi. I don’t know what other adventure awaits me in French Polynesia, but I hope that I left all mishap here in North America. I will arrive in Papeete at 05:05 am local time, after which I will go straight to the hotel. At 8 am I need to be at one of the local covid-19 test centers to take another test required for the travel to Tatakoto.

J’étais très stressé quand je suis arrivé ici ce matin, malgré le fait d’avoir pu dormir dans l’avion pendant 4 heures. Mon hôte ici à Papeete, un gars incroyable que je recommanderais à tous ceux qui ont besoin d’un logement à Papeete, m’a tout de suite dit: il faut se détendre maintenant, décompresser, c’est la Polynésie française, les choses fonctionnent différemment ici!
Je serai tôt pour mon vol vers Tatakoto demain matin. J’ai beaucoup de bagages, et je ne suis pas du tout inquiet de les payer, mais je suis un peu inquiet de savoir s’ils me permettront de tout emporter avec moi. Je sais par expérience passée que ce n’est pas toujours possible. Les vols vers cet atoll sont si rares, qu’ils peuvent ordonner que certaines choses soient transportées par avion, alors… qui sait s’il y a suffisamment d’espace dans l’avion.
Ensuite, à mon arrivée à Tatakoto, j’ai besoin de voir mon logement. Je ne me soucie de rien sauf d’avoir de la place pour une antenne et une alimentation secteur. Je sais qu’ils ont un système de climatisation basé sur des panneaux solaires, et j’espère que tout fonctionne comme prévu, bonjour.
Je vais dîner maintenant, après quoi je vais me coucher. Il fait très chaud et humide ici. Il a plu toute la journée aujourd’hui, entre 5 h et 18 h. Il est 19 heures maintenant et l’obscurité est totale, comme le coucher du soleil à 18 heures.

In order to comply with current entry requirements of French Polynesia, I need to take a covid-19 test on Friday, three days in advance of my departure flight. I am scheduled for it at 9:50 am. There is no such thing here as a ‘rapid’ test, so the results are not guaranteed to be available by Monday morning, but I was told that most of them come within 24 to 48 hours. Fingers crossed!
SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 – Cezar (VE3LYC) will operate as TX0T from Tatakoto Atoll (OC-298NEW), French Polynesia, between October 29 and November 5, 2020. He will use an ICOM IC-7000 with KMA500 amplifier into a multi-band vertical. Cezar will focus on 17, 20, 30, and 40m, operating CW and SSB. Visit here for more information about this project.
My goal is to make 4000 QSOs with at least 2500 unique stations located on six continents. I will operate primarily on 17, 20, 30, and 40 m, using CW and SSB.

POSTPONED – Due to the COVID pandemic, the team has decided to cancel their planned December activation of TO9W from the beautiful island of Saint Martin. We are sad to miss this year’s low band DX season and sad to miss the people and beauty of this wonderful island. Current plans, assuming the pandemic is no longer in control of our lives, include a six meter operation in June 2021 and our annual low bands activation currently planned for November 30-December 10, 2021.
