There’s maybe a bit of confusion about the several names of Union Glacier Stations and Camps in Antarctica. Today we are visiting the
Chilean one.

The Unión Glacier, located at 79º 46’ South, 83º 24’ West, is a large glacier converted since 2014 into the Base Camp.

Chile has long had an interest in this part of Antarctica and the Union Glacier Camp (picture aside) has became a Scientific Polar Station jointly
operated by the Chilean National Antarctic Institute (INACH) and the Armed Forces who provide logistic support for the Chilean Antarctic programs.

Here is as bit of history:

In 2013 during the 68^th Chilean Antarctic Campaign (ECA 50), the Polar Stations Arturo Parodi Alister (WAP CHL-14) –
Picture here on the Right shows the entrance of Arturo Parodi Alister Base – established at Patriot Hills in 1996, and Antonio Huneeus Gana,
were dismantled. Their equipments moved to the corridors of the future station, the Unión Glacier joint scientific polar station.

In January 2014, Chilean President Sebastián Piñera inaugurated the new Chilean Station at Union Glacier, named Estación Polar
Científica Conjunta Glaciar Unión or Union Glacier Camp (WAP CHL-NEW). See picture above.

Antonio Huneeus Gana Station (WAP CHL-15):

In November 1997, the first facilities to support scientific research were carried out according to special tents. By Exempt Resolution No. 303 of October 11, 1999, it was officially
named Antonio Huneeus Gana Summer Base (aka semi-permanent Antarctic camp) in memory of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the early
twentieth century, who at that time had an outstanding performance in the claim of Chilean sovereignty over the so-called Chilean Antarctic Territory. It was located 1 km from the private
Patriot Hills Base Camp (WAP MNB-Ø2) of the enterprise Adventure Network International at 80°18’ 07” South, 81°20’ 39” West .

Next time we’ll see few others on the area trying to under stand their evolution.

Il y a peut-être un peu de confusion sur les différents noms des stations Union Glacier et des camps en Antarctique. Aujourd’hui, nous visitons le
une chilienne.

Le glacier Unión, situé à 79º 46′ Sud, 83º 24′ Ouest, est un grand glacier converti depuis 2014 en camp de base.

Le Chili s’intéresse depuis longtemps à cette partie de l’Antarctique et le Union Glacier Camp (photo à part) est devenu conjointement une station polaire scientifique
exploité par l’Institut national antarctique chilien (INACH) et les forces armées qui fournissent un soutien logistique aux programmes antarctiques chiliens.

Voici un peu d’histoire :

En 2013 lors de la 68^ème campagne antarctique chilienne (ECA 50), les stations polaires Arturo Parodi Alister (WAP CHL-14) –
L’image ici à droite montre l’entrée de la base Arturo Parodi Alister – établie à Patriot Hills en 1996, et Antonio Huneeus Gana,
ont été démantelés. Leurs équipements se sont déplacés dans les couloirs de la future station, la station polaire scientifique conjointe Unión Glacier.

En janvier 2014, le président chilien Sebastián Piñera a inauguré la nouvelle station chilienne à Union Glacier, nommée Estación Polar
Científica Conjunta Glaciar Unión ou Union Glacier Camp (WAP CHL-NEW). Voir image ci-dessus.

En novembre 1997, les premières installations pour soutenir la recherche scientifique ont été réalisées sous des tentes spéciales. Par la résolution d’exemption n° 303 du 11 octobre 1999, il a été officiellement
nommé Antonio Huneeus Gana Base d’été (alias camp antarctique semi-permanent) en mémoire du ministre des Affaires étrangères du début
vingtième siècle, qui à l’époque avait une performance exceptionnelle dans la revendication de la souveraineté chilienne sur le soi-disant territoire antarctique chilien. Il était situé à 1 km de la
Camp de base de Patriot Hills (WAP MNB-Ø2) de l’entreprise Adventure Network International à 80°18′ 07′ Sud, 81°20′ 39′ Ouest .

La prochaine fois, nous verrons peu d’autres dans la région essayer de comprendre leur évolution.
