Je peux vous informer que le règlement des examens a été approuvé hier lors de la séance du Conseil. Il sera publié sur notre site web demain
vers 10 heures.. Cela signifie qu’elle entrera en vigueur le 21 avril 2021.

The QSL of Y83ANT, (sept. 13,1983) shows the GDR station “near Novolazarevskaya” at 71°S, 12°E. There is no mention of a name of this Base on the QSL, just a generic “GDR station near Novolazarevskaya.
A question arose: If Georg Forster Station was located at 70°46’S-11°51’E, is this old one, the same Base?
We have to thanks 2 Antarctic veterans, several time operating from this Antarctic site, who did help WAP to write a true story of this East Germany (GDR) laboratory, established near the Russian Novolararevskaya Sation: Ing. Andreas Mueller DL3LRM, and Dr. Volker Strecke DL8JDX.
Andreas said:
«Historically, the team from East Germany has been a part of the Russian Novo Station since the late 1970s, but had their own base about a kilometer away from the main building. In 1987, this base (a set of containers and an antenna areal) was named “George Forster” in order to become the first official research station of East Germany, as part of their efforts to be part of the Antarctic Treaty (which demands that a Country has to run a permanent all year base in Antarctica). So this is the reason why the QSL only states “near Novolazarevskaya”, since in 1983, as “George Forster” was not established yet. Had the privilege to visit that site and the plague twice, and also to met some of its residences».
Volker, another old time Antarctic veteran and operator of Georg Forster Station (WAP DDR-Ø1) sent us a complete explanation that clarifies the entire story on the GDR activity in Antarctica.
Volker wrote:
«The former East Germany (German Democratic Republic GDR) acceded to the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), see http://www.ats.aq on November 19, 1974, initially as non-consultative member. The GDR built this “Container station” in 1976 in the Schirmacher Oasis near the Russian Station Novolazarevskaya (WAP RUS-Ø9). It was called GDR Base Laboratory near Novoalazarevskaya. The only one HAM Radio activity from that Base Laboratory, between 1976 and 1987 was Y83ANT in 1983.

The GDR research activities included scientific works on ionospherics, magnetics, geology, chemistry and biology, were supported by the Russian colleagues from Novolazarevskaya and by the Indian colleagues from Dakshin Gangotri (WAP IND-Ø1) and Maitri (WAP IND-Ø3).
After ratification of the Treaty, the GDR received ATS consultative status on October 5, 1987. This was associated with an own research station in Antarctica. So the existing base laboratory was officially named GDR Antarctic Research Station Georg Forster (WAP DDR-Ø1) at Oct. 25, 1987.
In the summer season 1987-1988 at Georg Forster, a completely new radio station was built. Georg Forster did get the marine Call Y3ZA and the land-based Call Y3G. The radio system was a very powerful and reliable: KSS-1300 with 1 KW, able to operate in CW, SSB and SITOR Telex, several EKD-500 receivers, an extremely good working 2x85m V-Beam, a corner reflector antenna, a diversity antenna, a vertical antenna and several wire antennas».
HAM Radio activities from Georg Forster were:
1988-1989 Y88POL (op: DL8JDX)
1989-1991 Y90ANT (op: DK1BT)
1990-1992 Y88POL (op: DL8JDX)
The Georg Forster Base had 5 overwintering teams:
After the German reunification at Oct. 3, 1990 it was decided later that the further German Antarctic research activities would have been focused at Neumayer II Base and its surroundings. So in the years 1994, 1995 and 1996 the entire Georg Forster Station had been dismantled and disposed of.
A commemorative plaque was left at this place. The former Georg Forster base was included into the ATS list of historic sites in Antarctica with No. 87.

Volker concludes his report saying: «Andreas, DL3LRM is completely right with his comments based on his experience. As he was op. at DPØGVN in Neumaye III and operator at DP0POL/MM on the icebreaker Polarstern, He is the real expert and one of the few persons who were in the Antarctic and in the Arctic in the same year (2020)».

Documents say: The site of the former Georg Forster station is marked by a bronze plaque. It has been designated a Historic Site or Monument (HSM 87), following a proposal by 
Germany to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.
At the light of this new evidences, a new WAP reference number WAP DDR-Ø2 has been issued to:
GDR Base Laboratory near Novolazarevskaya,
71° South, 12° East
Location: Schirmacher Oasis
Callsign Y83ANT
Year of activity 1983
WAP DDR-Ø1 (from Oct 5, 1987, till Oct. 5, 1990) remains issued for Y88POL and Y90ANT.
The applicants who have submitted Y83ANT as DDR-Ø1, will be automatically credited DDR-Ø2 to it, and they eventually have to submit one of the two calls Y88POL or Y90ANT for DDR-Ø1.

Novolazarevskaya », depuis 1983, comme« George Forster »n’a pas encore été créé. A eu le privilège de visiter ce site et la peste deux fois, et aussi de rencontrer certains de ses
résidences ».
Volker , un autre vétéran de l’Antarctique et opérateur de la gare Georg Forster (WAP DDR-Ø1) nous a envoyé une explication complète qui
clarifie toute l’histoire de l’activité de la RDA en Antarctique.
Volker a écrit :
«L’ancienne Allemagne de l’Est (République démocratique allemande de la RDA) a adhéré au Système du Traité sur l’Antarctique (ATS), voir
http://www.ats.aq le 19 novembre 1974, initialement en tant que membre non consultatif. La RDA a construit cette «station de conteneurs» en 1976 dans l’oasis de Schirmacher près de la gare russe
Novolazarevskaya (WAP RUS-Ø9). Il s’appelait Laboratoire de base de la RDA près de Novoalazarevskaya . La seule activité radio HAM de ce laboratoire de base, entre
1976 et 1987 était Y83ANT en 1983 .

La base Georg Forster comptait 5 équipes d’hivernage:
Après la réunification allemande le oct. 3, 1990 , il a été décidé plus tard que les autres activités de recherche allemande sur l’Antarctique auraient été concentrées sur Neumayer II
Base et ses environs. Ainsi, dans les années 1994, 1995 et 1996, toute la gare Georg Forster avait été démantelée et détruite.
Une plaque commémorative a été laissée à cet endroit. L’ancienne base Georg Forster a été incluse dans la liste ATS des sites historiques en Antarctique avec le numéro 87 .

Volker conclut son rapport en disant: « Andreas, DL3LRM a tout à fait raison avec ses commentaires basés sur son expérience. Comme il était op. à
DPØGVN à Neumaye III et opérateur à DP0POL / MM sur le brise-glace Polarstern , il est le véritable expert et un des rares
personnes qui se trouvaient dans l ‘ Antarctique et dans l’ Arctique la même année (2020) ».

Frank, VO1HP got in touch to say that Rick VO1SA is now, very sadly, Silent Key.
Rick Burke VO1SA, VO2CW, VE1NG became SK on evening of Jan 20 2021 from ALS (MND). He was an avid DXer and his callsigns will be found in all DXpedition logs. In Sept 2020 he removed his towers and antennas and sold his station equipment. Rick served for 24 years as the VO QSL Bureau Manager. See more here

The January, 2021 CADXA program was “6O7O DXpedition to Somalia” by Ken Opskar, LA7GIA. Ken was in Somalia in September 2019 for a trip planned, in part, to be a fundraiser for Sabona, a Norwegian organization that funds education and meals for children in Africa. Ken got into amateur radio during his university studies in Trondheim, Norway and was first licensed in 1992. He was active in the club station LA1K between 1991-1995 and was also QSL manager. He moved to Oslo in 1996 after completing his studies. He enjoys CW DXing, DXpeditioning, contesting and operates on all bands 160-6m, mostly on CW with some digital and, if needed, SSB to catch a new slot or mode. He is a board member of the LA DX group, the European DX Foundation (EUDXF), INDEXA member and CWOps #1888. In 2017 he received the W6OL CW award for Excellence in DXpedition CW Operations from NCDXF. He also received the Intrepid Spirit Award 2018 at the IDXC 2019 convention in Visalia.

KM1CC has been “on the air” to commemorate the 118th Anniversary of Marconi sending the first transatlantic message from the USA to Europe (UK) on January 18, 1903. The message was sent from Marconi’s South Wellfleet, MA USA Wireless Station and received at his Poldhu Station, in UK.
The historic Marconi Wireless Station site, is part of Cape Cod National Seashore, it is listed by the National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark.

KM1CC a été «en ondes» pour commémorer le 118 e anniversaire de Marconi en envoyant le premier message transatlantique

The British established Base W on Detaille Island in 1956, intending to use it to launch dog-sledding expeditions across the ice to the Antarctic Peninsula, and conduct geologic and meteorologic research.
Antarctic explorers unearthed a “spooky” abandoned British Refuge Base on the icy continent after its last occupants are said to have fled more than 50 years ago.
Speaking during his Amazon Prime documentary “Terra Antarctica” Award-winning filmmaker and author Jon Bowermaster, did reveal a forgotten building on Detaille Island.: «I went ashore to have a look at an old British refuge hut, this one is known simply as Camp W, untouched since its last occupants ran out more than 50 years before», he said.
Jon Bowermaster talks about an old British supply depot on Detaille Island (WAP GBR-26), that hasn’t been occupied for more than half-a-century.
VP8CC was active on HF from Base W long ago (1958-59) and nobody else put this rare spot on the air since then. Thanks the great efforts by Mehdi F5PFP, who did activate this “spooky” site 10 years ago (6 march 2011) today we are aware to have made a contact with something very, very rare.
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is the national operation running in the frozen desert and is part of the Natural Environmental Research Council. With over 400 staff, BAS takes an active role in Antarctic affairs, operating five research stations, two ships and five aircraft in both polar regions, as well as addressing key global and regional issues. This involves joint research projects with over 40 UK universities and more than 120 national and international collaborations since a small expedition established a permanently occupied base on the continent during World War 2.

DECEMBER 30, 2020 – Seba SQ1SGB mentions that he (as VP8HAL) and Will, M0ZXA (as VP8DOI) will be active from Halley Research Station, Antarctica when time permits starting early January. Length of stay approx 6 weeks.

NEWS UPDATE – Starting mid-February 2021 (lasting 90 days), Tom is returning to Wake Island. Activity again expected on 40 / 20m SSB when time permits.
NOVEMBER 2, 2020 – Tom, NL7RR is a contractor working on Wake island. His KH9/NL7RR operation is time permitting, but does hope to operate (daily) between 06:00 – 08:00 UTC on 20 or 40 SSB. At this time, he is travelling to Hawaii for a week-long rest then returning to Wake.
Glenn, AL7JX got in touch to say that he and Tom, NL7WK are assisting Tom with LoTW uploads and QSL duties, both of which should be available soon; cards are being worked on and printed.

JANUARY 17, 2021 UPDATE by Antoine, 3D2AG for DX-World
The journey back home was long and getting the cargo out of the ship at the wharf in Fiji seemingly even longer in the intense heat, sweat amongst the human bustle and thrown-about copra bags, but in the end all equipment was retrieved and I am also ok, even if not yet fully recovered from the exhaustion and foot infection.Over the next days I will finalise the log transcriptions and upload to Club Log; also slowly getting to answer the flood of emails but first have many urgent tasks on the domestic and QRL side to attend to after a month’s absence. Thanks to all that persevered until the end and congratulations for all the QSOs, especially on 160m and 60m.

The boat is still on schedule arriving on the 15th January. Station dismantling is in progress, with the 6m yagi already packed and the Spiderbeam due to be taken down later this morning. As expected, last night was the first really good short-path opening into Europe on 20m, and if it happens again tonight it will have to be done on the inverted-V antenna facing the beach on a high coconut tree. The 160m conditions were poor again this morning, with just one EU station worked, but last night many JAs came in. North America is still very elusive on 160m from here; the inverted-L will be taken down on the 13th Jan and all operations cease by 0000 UTC on the 14th to pack the equipment. Several thousand QSOs were made so far and the logs (both CW and FT8) will be uploaded to Club Log after my return to Fiji. Sometimes stations might not have received their final RR73 on FT8, but nevertheless if reports were exchanged correctly they will be in the log. Fuel is running low, but should last over the remaining days; my health is slowly recovering despite the extreme heat. VY 73s and see you on the bands, Antoine 3D2AG

Le voyage de retour a été long et la sortie de la cargaison du navire au quai des Fidji semble encore plus longue dans la chaleur intense
L’agitation humaine et les sacs de coprah jetés, mais à la fin, tout l’équipement a été récupéré et je vais bien aussi, même si je ne suis pas encore complètement rétabli de l’épuisement et de l’infection du pied.
les jours prochains, je finaliserai les transcriptions des journaux et les téléchargerai dans Club Log; aussi lentement en train de répondre au flot de courriels, mais d’abord de nombreuses tâches urgentes du côté national et QRL à
s’occuper après un mois d’absence. Merci à tous ceux qui ont persévéré jusqu’au bout et bravo pour tous les QSO, notamment sur 160m et 60m.

Spiderbeam doit être démonté plus tard ce matin. Comme prévu, la nuit dernière a été la première très bonne ouverture sur un court chemin vers l’Europe sur 20m, et si cela se reproduit ce soir,
se faire sur l’antenne en V inversé face à la plage sur un haut cocotier. Les conditions de 160 m étaient encore mauvaises ce matin, avec une seule station de l’UE fonctionnait, mais la nuit dernière, de nombreux JA sont venus
en. L’Amérique du Nord est encore très insaisissable à 160 m d’ici; le L inversé sera démonté le 13 janvier et toutes les opérations cesseront à 0000 UTC le 14 pour emballer l’équipement. Nombreuses
mille QSO ont été réalisés jusqu’à présent et les logs (CW et FT8) seront téléchargés dans Club Log après mon retour aux Fidji. Parfois, les stations n’ont peut-être pas reçu leur RR73 final sur FT8, mais
