How far and wide does Don Bosco go? Certainly up to the more than 130 countries on the five continents where the Salesians are present today. What if you wanted to go even further?
Well, if we were to go to Antarctica, we’d also find a small image of Don Bosco there too. This photo was taken 15,073 kilometers from Spain as Don Bosco is present as patron of the military contingent that accompanies environmental researchers on the Antarctic Continent.

The Spanish Antarctic Station Gabriel de Castilla (latitude 62º 55’ S and longitude 60º 37’ W) WAP ESP-Ø2 is located on Deception Island, in the archipelago of the Southern Shetlands . The station is managed by the operations Bureau of the Army General Staff, which organises and directs the operation of the Station. During the the refuge “Gabriel de Castilla” was set on Deception Island, during the Spanish Antarctic campaign of 1988 and being officially inaugurated in 1989 as a military refuge to support research and topographical surveys.

Since its installation, this refuge has been managed by the Army, in close collaboration with the UTM-CSIC. In 1998 the refuge was classified as an Antarctic Station, and in 1999 as a ICTS. Since then it has undergone various periods of remodelling, the most important in the year 2009. This station is designed to carry out singular, cutting-edge scientific activities, and its results are valuable for polar research. Due to its singular nature, it is at the disposal of the national and international scientific communities, hosting studies concerning volcano monitoring, astrobiology, geology, and ecology.

According to the Spanish Military Association (AME), he is the patron saint of the Specialist Corps of the Ground Army and of the fundamental specialties of this corp: Electronics and Telecommunications, Maintenance and Assembly of Equipment, Electricity, IT, Automotive, Aircraft Maintenance, Maintenance of Weapons and Materials, Maintenance of Vehicles, Electronic and Telecommunication Maintenance, Welding, Electricity and Assembly of Equipment.

How did this initiative come about?

The first seminar on the Corps of Specialists was held at the Navacerrada Residence (Madrid) on 27 and 28 November, 1998. Among other things, the convenience and the need to have a specific Patron who could serve as an element of unity and generator of the spirit of the Corps was demonstrated; hence, for the elections, the existing traditions were reviewed and, taking care to preserve the ones with which the majority of the staff members of the Corps of Specialists identified, most having been students of the Professional Institutes, centers that very often venerated St John Bosco, On January 24, 2000, in a communication from the Army Chief of Staff, St. John Bosco was officially designated as Patron of the Specialist Corps of the Ground Army, after his approval in the corresponding act, issued by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and sanctioned by Msgr. José Manuel Estepa Llaurens, then Military Ordinary of Spain.

Every year the Specialists of the Ground Army celebrate Don Bosco on February 1^st.

Selon l’Association Militaire Espagnole (AME), il est le saint patron du Corps Spécialiste de l’Armée Terrestre et des spécialités fondamentales de ce corp: Electronique et
Télécommunications, entretien et assemblage d’équipement, électricité, informatique, automobile, entretien d’aéronefs, entretien des armes et des matériaux, entretien des véhicules, électronique et
Maintenance des télécommunications, soudage, électricité et assemblage d’équipements.

Comment cette initiative est-elle née ?

We have never truly been happy with any of the header images since the new website was launched last year. Every few weeks we’d change them and again we have changed them today.

Finally, we have settled upon an idea and perhaps the reader may like to help – especially when it comes to the picture choice of their own country.

As you may have worked out, the header images are of the current top six most wanted DXCC entities using Club Log (it’s amazing how difficult it is to find generic pictures of BS7H and BV9P!)

Within the next two weeks, we’ll then move on to #7 to #12 most wanted, then following two weeks it will be #13 to #18 etc etc..

Eventually, it will be the turn of the lesser wanted DXCC entities to feature as header images and that’s where we’d like your help or suggestion. When the time comes we’ll update this post, but ideally a reader provides an image showcasing their own DXCC entity. We’ll give advance notice when, for example, it’s the turn of Paraguay or East Malaysia or Taiwan to appear.

In the meantime, if you do find any pictures (better than currently shown) then get in touch.

DX-World was previously an exhibitor at Ham Radio Friedrichshafen so we still receive press releases. Here’s the latest update below for Ham Radio 2021:

After it was not possible for the International Amateur Radio Exhibition to take place last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the trade fair organizers on Lake Constance are optimistic that they will be able to provide a meeting place for the industry from June 25 to 27, 2021. With German Amateur Radio Club e.V. (DARC) as the perfect sponsor, the course is now being set for the 45th edition of the Ham Radio. “We are watching the situation closely, of course. At the moment we are assuming that we will be able to hold the Ham Radio in accordance with an extensive, tried-and-proven safety and hygiene concept and are looking forward to seeing everyone again at Europe’s most important trade fair for amateur radio,” explains Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann.

For the upcoming Ham Radio, there will be a new hall layout for a variety of reasons: Zeppelin Cat Hall A1 is currently serving as a transitional training and play venue for VfB Friedrichshafen’s volleyball players after the ZF Arena was closed due to structural defects. The district vaccination center is currently hosted in Hall A2. For this reason, the commercial exhibitors and associations will be occupying Halls A3 and A4, and the radio amateurs will be able to make exciting discoveries at the flea market in Halls B1 and B2. In this way there will be plenty of space available for both exhibitors and visitors.

Après qu’il n’a pas été possible pour l’Exposition internationale des radioamateurs d’avoir lieu l’année dernière en raison de la pandémie de coronavirus, le salon
les organisateurs du lac de Constance sont optimistes quant à la possibilité de fournir un lieu de rencontre pour l’industrie du 25 au 27 juin 2021. Avec le German Amateur Radio Club e.V. (DARC) comme le
parfait sponsor, le cap est maintenant fixé pour la 45e édition de la radio amateur. «Nous surveillons la situation de près, bien sûr. Pour le moment, nous supposons que nous serons en mesure de
