Republic of Chad Single-op DXpedition, 09 – 21 Oct 2018 by Kenneth LA7GIA

DXpedition booked for 12 days. Finally I obtained the VISA which took me some time. Usually getting a VISA is “easy”, but this time my professional VISA agent had to go to their European Embassy twice to obtain it!

Chad is ranked pretty high up worldwide on lower bands, even higher for NA west coast. It’s been a few years since the last single-op activation, and some more years since a group activated this entity. A couple of single op operations are not valid for DXCC.

The QTH will be a hotel in N’Djamena. There are unfortunately not many suitable and quiet locations (noise wise).

But the plan is to have the beam and dipoles high up about 25-30 meter. There are space for low band verticals and receiving antennas. I also plan to avoid the static season.

QTH: N’Djamena

I will use the following equipment.

1 x Radio Elecraft K3 (upgraded)
1 x Radio KX3 as backup
1 kW amplifier

My favourite 2 el Mosley beam: 20-17-15-12-10m up abt 25 meter
80m antenna, toploaded vertical – SPIDERBEAM POLE
Various backup TX antennas for different bands.
Various RX antennas: K9AY, BOG and beverage, some homebrew and some sponsored by Remoteqth.com

40/30m dipole or possible 2 el wire beam? up 25-30 meter.

République Tchadaise Single-op DXpedition, 09 – 21 oct 2018 par Kenneth LA7GIA

DXpedition réservé pour 12 jours. Finalement, j’ai obtenu le VISA qui m’a pris du temps. Habituellement, obtenir un visa est «facile», mais cette fois-ci, mon agent professionnel de visa a dû se rendre à l’ambassade européenne à deux reprises pour l’obtenir!

Chad est classé en haut du classement mondial sur les bandes inférieures, encore plus élevé sur la côte ouest de NA. Cela fait quelques années depuis la dernière activation en une seule opération, et quelques années de plus depuis qu’un groupe a activé cette entité. Quelques opérations simples ne sont pas valables pour DXCC.

Le QTH sera un hôtel à N’Djamena. Il n’y a malheureusement pas beaucoup d’endroits appropriés et silencieux (en termes de bruit).

Mais le plan est d’avoir le faisceau et les dipôles haut d’environ 25-30 mètres. Il y a de la place pour les verticales à faible bande et les antennes de réception. Je prévois également d’éviter la saison statique.

• 1 x Radio KX3 en sauvegarde
• 1 kW amplificateur

NEWS UPDATE – Even with scheduled air, “stuff” happens. We got all our gear checked in and took off from Tahiti just after lunch today. An hour and a half later. we were circling the Austal island of Tubuai and listening to the pilot say if the weather didn’t break in 30 minutes, we’d have to head back to Tahiti. We did land but the wind and rain were blowing hard. So we refueled and headed back. So close! It would have only been a quick hop over to Raivavae but it would have required another tricky landing. We’re rebooked for a 7am departure Wednesday morning. That could get us on the air by 2300Z. Keep your fingers crossed!

JUNE 12 — W5MJ, W5RF, K4UEE, K5PI & W5SJ will be active from Raivavae Island, OC-114 Austral Islands as TX5T between August 13-22, 2018. QRV on 160-6m CW, SSB, Digi. Website

DES NOUVELLES MISE À JOUR – Même avec des vols réguliers, des ‘choses’ se produisent. Nous avons pris tous nos équipements en main et avons décollé de Tahiti juste après le déjeuner aujourd’hui. Une heure et demie plus tard. nous tournions autour de l’île Austal de Tubuai et, en écoutant le pilote, nous disions que si le temps ne se cassait pas en 30 minutes, nous devions retourner à Tahiti. Nous avons atterri mais le vent et la pluie soufflaient fort. Nous avons donc fait le plein et sommes repartis. Si proche! Ce ne serait qu’un bond rapide vers Raivavae mais cela aurait nécessité un autre atterrissage délicat. Nous sommes rebooked pour un départ à 7h mercredi matin. Cela pourrait nous faire passer à 2300Z. Gardez les doigts croisés !

NEWS UPDATE – The 6Gs DXpedition team will be operating from Christmas Island (VK9X) in October 2018. Arriving on the island late on Tuesday 16th (local time), we hope to be operational by the evening of Wednesday 17th (1400z). Station tear-down will start on Monday 29th, but we hope to keep LF stations on the air until the morning of 30th October (0100z).

The team is a little smaller this year with five operators. We welcome new member Tony (G2NF). The other four operators are Nigel (G3TXF), Chris (G3SVL), David (G3WGN) and Mike (G3WPH). Four of the team members operated together in 2011 from the other Christmas Island (T32) as part of the FSDXA T32C DXpedition.

DES NOUVELLES MISE À JOUR – L’équipe DXpedition des 6Gs opèrera à partir de l’île Christmas (VK9X) en octobre 2018. En arrivant sur l’Ile mardi 16 décembre (heure locale), nous espérons être opérationnels dans la soirée du mercredi 17 (14h00). Le démantèlement des stations débutera le lundi 29, mais nous espérons garder les stations de LF en ondes jusqu’au 30 octobre au matin (0100z).

L’équipe est un peu plus petite cette année avec cinq opérateurs. Nous accueillons le nouveau membre Tony (G2NF). Les quatre autres opérateurs sont Nigel (G3TXF), Chris (G3SVL), David (G3WGN) et Mike (G3WPH). Quatre des membres de l’équipe ont opéré ensemble en 2011 depuis l’autre île de Noël (T32) dans le cadre de la FSDXA T32C DXpedition.

We’re pleased to announce that Rob Fanfant N7QT has joined the VP6D team. Rob is a DX-pedition veteran whose most recent project was VK9MA Mellish Reef in 2017. Previous projects include: VK9WA Willis Island, Manihiki E51MQT, Montserrat VP2MQT, Austral Islands (TX5Z), Christmas Island, Australia(VK9AN), San Andres (5J0X , HK0/N7QT), Sint Maarten (PJ7/N7QT), Saba (PJ6/N7QT), Austral Islands TX5D), Saint Lucia (J6/N7QT), Saint Lucia (J6/N7QT). We think you will agree that Rob is well qualified for the project and we are happy to add him to the team.

As we march towards our departure date of October 16th the project is on schedule. A VP6D working group is currently in Northern California preparing the equipment for shipment to Braveheart in New Zealand. On August 3rd we had the pleasure of meeting Eric Swartz WA6HHQ at the Elecraft factory where we were introduced to the Elecraft team and toured the factory. We then accepted 8 complete K3s stations for use at VP6D. Thanks to Elecraft and all our corporate sponsors for their ongoing support.

Today we are continuing the tasks of integrating the radios, computers, software, configuring the network and preparing the shipping cases. We plan an end to end test, from the keyboard to the BGAN to the log server in the cloud. We expect to have the equipment ready for the customs broker by Weds, Aug 7th.

MAY 15, 2018 — On the road again, and this time on the road to Africa to reach their next QTH on far from Harare: just in the middle of a great safari land. As a matter of fact, the leader Antonio, IZ8CCW and the co-leader Gabriele, I2VGW, are happy to announce to the Dx Community that the new adventure with an international MDXC team: Zimbabwe 2018. The license is already in the leaders’s hands as Z23MD and they planned to be on air from October 26 to November 6th

According to the evaluations that they have done, they are confident to give a lot of dxers the possibility to work this Country in the Low bands, WARC and especially in the Digimodes.

At the moment the team is already built by experienced operators: 20 peoeple coming from 8 (eight) countries. On the air will be five stations, any mode, around the clock.

15 MAI 2018 — Sur la route encore, et cette fois sur la route vers l’Afrique pour atteindre leur prochain QTH loin de Harare: juste au milieu d’un grand terrain de safari. En fait, le leader Antonio, IZ8CCW et le co-leader Gabriele, I2VGW, sont heureux d’annoncer à la communauté Dx que la nouvelle aventure avec une équipe internationale MDXC: Zimbabwe 2018. La licence est déjà entre les mains des dirigeants en utilisant l’indicatif Z23MD et ils ont prévu d’être en ondes du 26 octobre au 6 novembre

Selon les évaluations qu’ils ont faites, ils sont confiants de donner à beaucoup de dxers la possibilité de travailler ce pays dans les bandes Low, WARC et surtout dans les Digimodes.

Actuellement l’équipe est déjà construite par des opérateurs expérimentés: 20 peoeple provenant de 8 (huit) pays. Sur l’air sera cinq stations, n’importe quel mode, autour de l’horloge.

Dear friends,

In August starts the expedition to North Pole from a ARMI member (IU5KUH) with sailing ship MELORIA (or another sailing ship) from WAF (World Arctic Fund) and ONG from Berlin (Germany).

ARMI are the sponsor for this activation. Simone, IU5KUH will be operating in 20, 30, 40 meter in SSB, CW and PSK. The special call-sign is II0PN (INDIA INDIA ZERO PAPA NOVEMBER) and transmitting from maritime mobile with ICOM IC 7300, tuner AH-4 and a vertical TAGRA nautical antenna.

He will be in the Arctic area for the entire month of August and will begin his return in early September, touching the island of the Bears, the port of Oslo (Norway) and finally Rostok in Germany (ports may vary depending on the weather situation).

I’m attaching an information in PDF from the “Bollettino dei Marinai” the official journal of ARMI.

We are preparing a webpage on our site, where you will enter all the information to connect with Simone and a guest book where all those who will connect can post a personal message !!

At the end of the mission, a special QSL will be prepared which will be sent to all those who request it.

This activity is part of the project “90th anniversary of the expedition of Umberto Nobile with the Airship Italy” and the call-sign is “II0PN/mm” has been included among the many special stations that can be connected to receive the awards.

I kindly ask you to inform all your members about this activity! I also ask you to communicate with Simone because from those latitudes it is difficult to use other communication systems other than shortwave radio.

JULY 4 — Happy 4th of July America from Baker Island where we will celebrate with hot dogs and burgers.

After 9 days on Baker it’s time to think about going home.

We’ve put about 60,000 QSOS in the log. By sticking to our commitment to keep stations on 20 meters, we have over 16,000 unique calls in the log. Many have thanked us for ATNOs. Despite it being June we have over 1200 top band QSOs and many European stations on the other low bands in the log. And the use of FT8 has allowed many hams with moderate stations to get us.

We start tearing down at daybreak and plan to have 3 of the 8 radios and 5 of the 10 antennas in their boxes and on the boat by lunch.

We will operate some CW and SSB in the afternoon until dark and dismantle more in the evening. Final shutdown occurs at our sunrise Thursday and we must have the camp dismantled and on the boat by Thursday night.

4 JUILLET – Joyeuse 4 juillet Amérique de Baker Island où nous allons célébrer avec des hot-dogs et des hamburgers.

Après 9 jours sur Baker, il est temps de penser à rentrer à la maison.

Nous avons mis environ 60 000 QSOS dans le journal. En respectant notre engagement de maintenir les stations sur 20 mètres, nous avons plus de 16 000 appels uniques dans le journal. Beaucoup nous ont remerciés pour les ATNO. Malgré le fait que nous soyons en juin, nous avons plus de 1200 QSO haut de gamme et de nombreuses stations européennes sur les autres bandes basses du journal. Et l’utilisation de FT8 a permis à beaucoup de jambons avec des stations modérées de nous avoir.

Nous commençons à démolir au lever du jour et prévoyons d’avoir 3 des 8 radios et 5 des 10 antennes dans leurs boîtes et sur le bateau à l’heure du déjeuner.

Nous allons opérer quelques CW et SSB dans l’après-midi jusqu’à la nuit et démonter plus dans la soirée. La fermeture finale se produit à notre lever du soleil jeudi et nous devons faire démonter le camp et sur le bateau jeudi soir.

JUNE 28 — Weather 1 Baker Island Dxpedition 0

We did get 3 stations up and running last night one day ahead of schedule.

They say it never rains on Baker. At midnight giant squalls came through knocking out one of our 3 antennas we worked so hard to get up. We worked through the morning and have 6 stations available for the scheduled startup tonight at 05:00 UTC.

Tomorrow before it gets too hot we will erect 2 more antennas making 8 stations available as the bands allow.

The team is exhausted but excited about settling in and making QSOs around the globe.

28 JUIN – Météo 1 Baker Island Dxpedition 0

Nous avons eu 3 stations en marche la nuit dernière un jour d’avance.

Ils disent qu’il ne pleut jamais sur Baker. A minuit, des bourrasques géantes sont tombées sur l’une de nos trois antennes, nous avons travaillé si dur pour nous lever. Nous avons travaillé toute la matinée et avons 6 stations disponibles pour le démarrage prévu ce soir à 05:00 UTC.

Demain, avant qu’il ne fasse trop chaud, nous installerons 2 antennes de plus, ce qui rendra 8 stations disponibles, comme le permettent les bandes.

L’équipe est épuisée mais enthousiaste à l’idée de s’installer et de faire des QSO dans le monde entier.

The 2016 CY9C DXpedition team has been quietly working behind the scenes with Parks Canada attempting to gain permission to mount a significant DXpedition to Sable Island CY0. This effort began more than a year ago. For a number of years now, the Parks Canada policy has been to not allow overnight stays on the island. This was one reason the small team of N0TG, VE1RGB and WA4DAN mounted a one day DXpedition to Sable on September 8, 2014.

Aaron, VA1AXC, who worked with Parks Canada, was active from Sable during his tours on the island. Last August, Aaron left Parks Canada and went back to work with the Canadian Coast Guard. Aaron was very instrumental in the months long negotiations. We had worked with Aaron during the CY0P DXpedition in October 2013 as well as our one day CY0C operation. Our team donated equipment and antennas for Aaron to use while on Sable. Many email exchanges and phone calls were made between Parks Canada, Aaron and the CY9C team in an attempt to gain permission.

The CY9C team sent a “Qualifications Package” to Parks Canada highlighting not only our general DXpedition experience, but our experience out on Sable Island. Many different scenarios were discussed and there was a lot of back and forth between Parks Canada and our team. There were times that permission seemed nothing more than a dream. It was very discouraging but we kept plugging away trying to stay positive. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, we received word from Parks Canada that we had been granted permission for a one week DXpedition in September 2019!!

The 2019 CY0 DXpedition team will consist of 6-7 ops, mostly those who were on the CY9C team. Much more information will be forthcoming later this year and as we enter 2019. The 2019 CY0 team is already in the initial planning stage for this DXpedition. Sable is especially rare on CW and a big effort will be made to satisfy that demand.

L’équipe CY9C DXpedition 2016 a travaillé discrètement en coulisses avec Parcs Canada en essayant d’obtenir la permission de monter une DXpedition importante vers l’île CY0 de l’île de Sable. Cet effort a commencé il y a plus d’un an. Depuis plusieurs années, Parcs Canada a pour politique de ne pas autoriser les séjours d’une nuit sur l’île. C’est l’une des raisons pour lesquelles la petite équipe de N0TG, VE1RGB et WA4DAN a monté une journée de DXpedition à Sable le 8 septembre 2014.

Aaron, VA1AXC, qui a travaillé avec Parcs Canada, était actif à partir de Sable durant ses tournées sur l’île. En août dernier, Aaron a quitté Parcs Canada et est retourné travailler avec la Garde côtière canadienne. Aaron a été très instrumental dans les négociations de mois longs. Nous avions travaillé avec Aaron pendant la CYXP DXpedition en octobre 2013 ainsi que notre opération d’une journée CY0C. Notre équipe a fait don d’équipement et d’antennes à Aaron pour l’utiliser sur Sable. De nombreux échanges de courriels et appels téléphoniques ont été faits entre Parcs Canada, Aaron et l’équipe CY9C dans le but d’obtenir la permission.

L’équipe de CY9C a envoyé une «trousse de qualification» à Parcs Canada en soulignant non seulement notre expérience générale de DXpedition, mais aussi notre expérience sur l’île de Sable. De nombreux scénarios différents ont été discutés et il y a eu beaucoup de va-et-vient entre Parcs Canada et notre équipe. Il y avait des fois que la permission ne semblait rien de plus qu’un rêve. C’était très décourageant mais nous avons continué à nous débrouiller en essayant de rester positif. Enfin, il y a quelques semaines, nous avons reçu une lettre de Parcs Canada selon laquelle on nous avait accordé la permission d’effectuer une DXpedition d’une semaine en septembre 2019 !!

L’équipe CY0 DXpedition 2019 comprendra 6-7 ops, principalement ceux qui étaient dans l’équipe CY9C. Beaucoup plus d’informations seront disponibles plus tard cette année et comme nous entrons 2019. L’équipe CY0 2019 est déjà dans la phase de planification initiale pour cette DXpedition. Sable est particulièrement rare en CW et un gros effort sera fait pour satisfaire cette demande.

NEWS UPDATE — After receiving absolutely no single word of reply to our invitation from the 3YØZ organizers (we leave that for your own judgement), an important decision has been taken by our team.

We’re now open for applications to join the 3YØI Bouvet Island Expedition

A full inspection of the expedition vessel by the team in person is planned after our trip to the Pacific. There are 2 reasons to this. We wish to avoid any circumstances that wouldn’t allow us to put 3YØI on the air and we also wish to reduce spending to minimum. Thanks to proper planning, total cost of the expedition is already much lower than any other similar venture announced recently. More savings to come after the inspection.

Our main container in already on route to South Africa, where our journey to Bouvet will begin from.

As said before, we invite experienced operators to join efforts to activate the 2nd most wanted entitiy during Antarctic summer. More details available on request by email at: dom@rebeldxgroup.com. Don’t forget to attach your ham radio CV and to ask your boss for 1 month+ vacations!

Une inspection complète du navire d’expédition par l’équipe en personne est prévue après notre voyage dans le Pacifique. Il y a 2 raisons à cela. Notre conteneur principal est déjà en route vers l’Afrique du Sud, d’où part notre voyage vers Bouvet.
